Food Safety Training

Food Safety Level 1 and Food Safety Level 2

Flow have developed two tailored Food Safety training modules for the hospitality industry to enable any person who works with food to ensure that the food they produce or handle is safe for customers to eat.

Food Safety Level 1 has been specifically designed for all bar, waiting and front of house staff in the hospitality industry, covering their legal requirements as food handlers.

Food Safety Level 2 is a slightly more advanced module which has been specifically designed for chefs, kitchen porters and all kitchen staff to cover the training that they must undertake by law before working in a kitchen. Our Level 2 Food Safety module is also available in both Polish and Spanish.

Both modules are fully compliant and have been endorsed by the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) and the IOH (Institute of Hospitality) and accredited by the NSA (National Skills Academy).

The Flow Food Safety Level 2 training module has been successfully mapped by Edexcel against the Food Safety in Catering Level 2 qualification (QCF), and the training and content are therefore fully compliant with the qualification.

Edexcel is the UK's largest awarding body offering academic and vocational qualifications.

Food Safety Regulations - Your Legal Responsibilities

As a business owner or food handler, you have a duty to comply with the Food Hygiene Regulations (2006)

The guidance is applicable to all types of food business in England, Scotland and Wales.

In summary the requirements state that:

  • food handlers must be trained in food hygiene matters relevant to their work.
  • food handlers are trained to a level which is appropriate to their duties.
  • it is recommended that staff receive training that is relevant to the sector they work in.

Who is Flow Food Safety training suitable for?

Flow Food Safety training is aimed at anyone working in catering or hospitality whether employed or self employed, working in restaurants, hotels, fast food outlets, takeaways, cafes, bars, kitchens, catering in hospitals, or schools and colleges.

Food Safety Level 1 is suitable for all front of house staff whereas Food Safety Level 2 is suitable for chefs and kitchen porters. Flow Food Safety training allows every catering business, regardless of size, to provide all staff with first class training at a fraction of the cost and disruption of classroom based training.

When and how often should staff receive this training?

Before starting work as a food handler, everyone must know the essentials of food hygiene, and within three months of starting work all food handlers are recommended to receive formal training. Using the Flow Food Safety module you can ensure that your staff receive the required training either before they start work or at any time within the first three months that is convenient to your business.

It is recommended that food handlers receive refresher training every three years

How does Flow Food Safety training work?

Food safety training can be bought and used instantly online, used at a time to suit your business with no disruption to your working day.

Learners open the online training module using an individual access code that they receive via email. The training and test usually take between around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete (depending on learning speed), which is equivalent to around 5 hours of face-to-face group training.

Upon completion of the Flow Food Safety training learners will sit an online test. Learners are required to achieve an 85% pass mark, and, if necessary, may re-sit the test another 2 times at no extra cost, having revisited the training material.

On successful completion, the learner will receive a certificate which is available to print out immediately or save.

The candidates Food Safety training results are also downloaded to the Flow Management System where managers can track training activity, view results and access training records.

Why choose Flow Food Safety training?

Online courses are an established way of meeting the legal requirement to have sufficient training. Training food handlers using a certified e-learning course is the fastest, easiest and most effective way to achieve compliance with the law.

Flow Hospitality Training are an SQA approved training provider with years of experience in delivering training to the hospitality industry. We have developed the Flow Food Safety training module in response to the growing trend for e learning and for employers to find an affordable and flexible solution to meeting their legal obligations. Our Food Safety training has been endorsed by both the Institute of Hospitality and the SQA. It is not a requirement of the law to have undertaken a face to face course or a formally accredited qualification.

When your business is audited by an Environmental Health Officer you must be able to show what provision you have made for food hygiene training. Using the Flow Management System you can easily demonstrate this at the touch of a button, or provide copies of your staff certificates as evidence of your training practices.
